Our Story

The Inspiration Behind Al-Shifa Markaz (Trust)

Al-Shifa Markaz (Trust)

Al-Shifa Markaz (Trust) حمدہلل There are many charity projects going on in the country. But still many people have asked me; why there was a need to establish another one? Why didn’t we incorporate Al-Shifa Markaz efforts with the existing charity work going on in the country? To address the question one needs to go through two things that has been itching me for a long time. From the very childhood, I have noted the difference between charity or low fee clinic against standard medical facilities. Why does these charity or low fee clinic always gives lal dawai (red syrup) and open pills while high fee clinics never gives same medicine even though these doctors have graduated from the same university. There is no doubt that these charity clinics help in great deal addressing the health issues of poor people but they do not reduce the difference between rich and poor by having different treatment procedures. The second thing which has been bothering me is that many women feel uncomfortable when being examined by a male doctor. I remember one of my aunt never wanted to go to a doctor. She always used to send someone else to brief symptoms to the doctor. Whenever asked why? She would reply; she does not like to be examined by a male. She only went to the doctor when the case had become complicated. Mainly to address these two issues, I decided to establish a medical facility where females will be treated through female staff only and where same quality of service will be provided as being provided in reputable institutions like Agha Khan hospital without cost. This is how the idea of Al-Shifa Markaz was born. I started doing feasibility study. Different locations were surveyed but I choose to work in ‘Surjani town’ as I wanted to mainly address white choler section of society. By the grace of Allah I was able to locate a suitable site in sector 7A of Surjani town. I didn’t miss the time to book the location and trapped the money I had; before something makes me reverse the decision. I started sharing my ideas with friends, colleagues and relatives which turned me into We. In the beginning we decided to keep the project simple and start with an OPD clinic only. Basic objectives were laid down which are:  Al-Shifa Markaz will only service women and children.  Al-Shifa Markaz will host 100% female staff from doctor to chemist, nurse to receptionist and strict rules will be placed to address concerns related to modesty and privacy of women.  The clinic will be 100% charity based. We will only charge a token fee of Rs 20/- to make sure non- interested parties do not waste scarce resources.  Only patent medicines will be provided. No sub-standard medicines will be given. Leaving the exceptions; All medicines will be provided by Al-Shifa Markaz that includes antibiotic or other costly medicines. Doctor will not prescribe from external sources.  High standard of service will be maintained. Only qualified and experienced female doctors will be hired. Proper medical history will be maintained for each patient.  To improve doctor’s diagnostics and to make our service comparable with reputable institutions, Al- Shifa Markaz will have basic facilities like Sugar/cholesterol/Uric acid analyzer, Pulse Co-Oximeter for hemoglobin count, Ultrasound machine, oxygen, Nebulizer etc. Moreover we will keep including facilities that are more required by women based on the advice of doctor. After laying down basic objectives, we initiated collecting funds. Thanks to Allah, we got quick response from different section of society and were able to gather enough monetary support to renovate and inaugurate the clinic. In the 1st phase we only purchased the very necessary equipment needed. This included clinic furniture like examination couch, single folding bed, drip stand, chairs etc. and basic equipment like stethoscope, B.P. Mercury set, dressing kit, thermometer, O2 kit, weight machine, nebulizer etc. Medicines were purchased and stocked for the operation to begin. Al-Shifa logo, front board, Patient information card, ticket voucher and donation slips were designed and printed. Moreover interviews were conducted to hire the medical staff. A female Dow medical graduate with 17 years of experience was hired as doctor. A receptionist to fill out the patient information card and to respond to public quires was assigned. A nurse cum chemist was appointed to give medicines and treat patient for drip or dressing. A watchman was placed at the gate to monitor along with an administrator to look after everything for the management of clinic. Pick and drop service was given to the doctor. The clinic started its operations on 16th of December 2013. Till now it’s functioning as scheduled by the grace of Allah. We have yet treated only 700 patients but gradually the frequency is improving as more and more people know about our services in the locality. ا حنشاWe will be initiating the 2nd phase in May 2014. During our feasibility study we had noted that females are highly beneficiary of Ultrasound machines. During pregnancy, doctor asks for about 3-4 ultrasounds scan which a single test costs around Rs 2,000/- in Agha Khan. This cost is not bearable for poor patients. However we noted that buying an Ultrasound machine is a major cost but its operational cost is negligible. Similarly we noted that hemoglobin deficiency is common in females. If we can provide the doctor with simple gadgets of Sugar/cholesterol/Uric acid analyzer, Pulse Co-Oximeter for hemoglobin count, Ultrasound machine, hematology analyzer for CBC, her diagnostics are going to get greatly improved. She will not need to send patients for tests in the lab and hence can advise the patient promptly for most of the deceases. Female doctors have high turnout ratio. This is what we observed during our early days of operations. So in 2nd phase we have planned to hire another doctor along with a sonologist. We will segregate doctors timing for morning and evening shifts. Sonologist will be dedicated for conducting ultrasound scans. We are also now initiating legal procedures in a month or two. 5 members have been identified as board members. Till now all collections have been either submitted into my personal account or has been collected and invested as cash. To introduce transparency, we have planned to have Al-Shifa own joint account (of all 5 members). All donations collected as cash or e-form will be required to be submitted into the account. Any money taken out can only be done with signatures of at-least two board members. I am really thankful to all for their support. I would like to hear suggestions from you people and of course require monetary support. Anyone who wants to have a physical visit is most welcome. He may arrange any suitable timing (probably Saturday) with our Administrator (Abdul Rahim Qureshi) on his mobile 03232880662 or call Al-Shifa Markaz +92-(0)21-34051164 and leave a message to the receptionist. Regards, Syed Muhammad Saad Al-Shifa Markaz (Trust)
